Pianist Albert Marquès and trumpeter Rachel Therrien announce the January 30th worldwide release of Dialogue – Vol. II, the second installment in a two-part collaboration resulting from a decade-long musical friendship. Unlike Volume I – a boundless exploration of their own musical voices that balances avant and beauty – Volume II shares a playfulness and freeness over well-known standards.
It’s one thing to have the full freedom to explore where the music takes a player on their own contemporary jazz compositions, but it’s another level to expertly connect and anchor spacious duo improvisations over timeless melodies of jazz giants. Marques & Therrien delight the listener with new perspectives and fresh reinterpretations of Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, Rodgers & Hart, Jerome Kern, and more.
This second album again captures the spontaneous chemistry between two genre-bending artists whose musical conversation takes many forms. “Dialogue Vol. II is really about the intimacy of two voices choosing to trust each other completely. In a duo setting there’s nowhere to hide: every breath, every silence, every shift in energy matters,” explains Rachel Therrien.
Dialogue – Vol. II also includes an expressive and raw trumpet-forward take on traditional Mexican children’s folk song, La Cucaracha, demonstrating Therrien’s prowess as a top Latin brass player. The album is rounded out with three original compositions that reconnect with the avant approaches on beautiful melodies found in Volume I. This album bleeds authenticity – unfiltered and vulnerable, it places the listener right inside the creative landscape of the studio.
