Each year, the Jazz-in-Schools presentations work on a different theme, (the 2012 theme is COMMUNICATION) and have slightly different configuration of presenters. The presentations are given by the world-class faculty members of the Wetaskiwin Jazz Camp led by award-winning drummer and Wetaskiwin native, Karl Schwonik. The style of the presentation is 'Edu-Tainment': presentations are up to 40min long and are educational, extremely interactive and also entertaining from start to finish. They encourage interaction, call-and-response, questions and sometimes even let the students play with the band!
A major part of the Wetaskiwin Jazz Society's mandate is to provide workshops and performances during the school year and Jazz-in-Schools is just one way we do that. Thus far, the WJS has brought many different world-class musicians to Central Alberta and presented over 50 events at venues from elementary to high schools and universities. The goal of these events is to expose more young people to jazz and to do it in an engaging and interactive fashion. To date over 5,000 young Alberta students have taken part in our workshops.
Jazz-in-Schools tour 2012 is presented by the Wetaskiwin Jazz Society www.wetaskiwinjazz.com for more information on the events, please see the website.
